Happy Halloween! | Dallas Children and Family Photography
October 31, 2011Halloween Treat Ideas | Dallas Children and Family Photography
October 28, 2011Halloween is such a fun time of year. Except for when you think it is just a fun time of year and you take your children to the local Halloween store, full of dismembered body parts, Zombie children’s costumes, and gore of all kinds. Then you remember that some people celebrate Halloween in a not-so-fun way. But that’s off point. To keep this holiday fun and devil-worshipping-free, I looked up some super fun ways to celebrate Halloween 2011 with food. The kids will go crazy over these tasty and festive treats!
This first image? Self explanatory. And ohhh soooo goood.

Last year I tried to go all out. For breakfast we had ghost-shaped pancakes with chocolate chip eyes, ghost-blood (aka milk), and these jack-o-lanterns (cut out of oranges) filled with bug guts (mixed fruit.) I set it up so well that Mackay refused to eat any of it because it sounded too disgusting. How can it be disgusting when it looks so cute? Better luck this year.

These little mummy-hot dogs look way too cute and what kid doesn’t like hot dogs? (What adult doesn’t like hot dogs?)

These little spiders look delicious, and disgusting, all at the same time.Would be great for a party, or to create with your kiddos!

And for a healthy snack during the day these little Apple Bites couldn’t be cuter.

I hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween 2011 and create some fun memories with your kids they won’t soon forget! If you have any fun and creative ideas or traditions in your family, leave a comment and let me know–I would love to hear them!
What a Witch | Dallas Childrens Photographer
October 26, 2011Mackay was just looking so cute in her witch costume I knew I had to do a photoshoot with her. The weekend I had planned to go out, Nate was out of town. But I bravely accepted the challenge. So, Zack in a stroller with a bazillion books and toys, hanging out right beside me on this wooded trail worked out pretty well. Surprisingly. There were a few shots I didn’t get that I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wish I could have. But by that time Zack was out of his stroller and running either a) down the path, or b) toward the parking lot.
On the drive there I was trying to prep Mackay. (Children of photographers have a hard lot in life, I’m telling you.) I told her that when we got to our location I wanted her to “cooperate”. Why do you want me to cooperate? Mackay asked. Because we want the pictures to turn out really nice, I tried to tell her. Why do we need nice pictures? she asked. Because we did your hair and make-up and are driving out to a special location, I told her. The conversation, somehow, miraculously worked. I had about 15 minutes of her time where I could actually tell her what to do and she actually did it. A true miracle, indeed.
So without further adieu, meet my little witch. And her witch mop.

I hope you all have a wonderful Halloween. And I hope your kids get lots of candy–all the kinds that you enjoy secretly eating when they aren’t watching. C’mon. You know we all do it.
Oh, the Texas State Fair | Dallas Children and Family Photographer
October 24, 2011I don’t know what makes the Texas State Fair so magical. But even though we had the opportunity to go this year (and every year since we’ve moved to Dallas), it was a sad day for me yesterday knowing that it had ended. I don’t know if it is the corn dogs, the fried foods (did you know calories don’t count when you’re at the fair?), the great exhibits and shows, or if it just comes down to the magic you can see in the faces of children. When young and old alike find that same magic, together in one place…. ah… I love it.
I have asthma, so every year we go to the Fair I sit outside by myself while my family goes and checks out the animals. Last year I was sitting by a building when a Fair worker came and sat next to me, lit up his cigarette, and stayed there the remainder of the time (which kind of totally defeats the purpose of staying away from asthma inducing things). This year I sat and watched strollers coming and going, wondering just how many animals were in that big building, and how long my family would actually be in there. But when I got to see these images that Nate took for me, the sitting and waiting was totally worth it.
And seriously? An ostrich? I totally would never have done this. I have this image that ostriches are super scary.
Ah, the magic of seeing a sea of people and wondering how you will ever get to the other side. And then somehow you do. With every member of your family.
Good-bye until next year, Texas State Fair. And good-bye to the root beer, corn dogs, funnel cakes, fried salsa, nachos, fried cheesecake…
A local photographer friend of mine had a special photoshoot in mind a few months ago and asked if I would be willing to help. And of course I said yes! She recently found out she was expecting baby #3 and wanted a creative way to share the good news with family and friends:
We had this photoshoot close to home, complete with chalk and a stucco wall and had such a fun time! Here’s to hoping she doesn’t get more outnumbered by boys!
