I think when a mother books a photoshoot for her kiddos, the only thing stopping her from jumping up and down with giddy excitement is the nervous anticipation that she is going to have to find clothes for her kids to wear. That match…but don’t. That are girl-y…masculine. Oh, and that her kids actually like and will wear again. Can I get an amen? Most clients request a What-to-Wear guide, which I happily create custom for their family and session location. But a lot of women just need a place to START looking. To get their own creative juices flowing. So I thought a little run-down of my go-to stores could be helpful:

Janie and Jack. If I’m looking for something very girl-y and feminine for the little lady, this is the place that I go. They have so many great colors. And great accessories. (A matching umbrella? Yes, please!) And there is always something to dress the boy in to match. (So sorry, but wardrobe is all arranged around the girls.)
Zara is where I went for Mackay’s birthday photoshoot outfit this year. Their clothes are the very hip “in” style right now. You know, the eclectic grungy look? Do I sound like I know what I’m talking about? From a perspective of wearing it myself–HEAVENS no. But seeing it on others and dressing my own like this every once in a while. LOVE it. So, so, so, so much. This may be the wardrobe set out of all the ones I put together today that I want to photograph the most right now.
chasing-fireflies.com. A recent client of mine introduced me to this web-site. (Thanks, Anita!) And I am so head-over-heels in love with it. Not only do they have the MOST adorable little girls dresses and outfits. (Um..boys, too.) But their costumes are out of this world. They’ve got toys and gifts. If you’re looking for a big brother or little sister shirt? This is the place to go. They even have number shirts for your child to wear on their birthdays. Need to plan the birthday party? Come here. And my favorite random find on this site: a tooth box for the tooth fairy. It looks so authentic and official. My mom just made me put my naked tooth under my pillow. But now my kids will have a special box. Seriously, this is my very favorite recent find.
Gap. Doesn’t this wardrobe just scream “posh”? I love it. Gap i s always a great place to go. Especially when looking for outfits for boys and girls, and baby. You are sure to find something to match. And if you’ve got to clothe the whole family this is usually the first place I stop at to find it all. I’m pretty much on a first name basis with the store manager.
Mini Boden. This is a great place to find something for everyone. They’ve got the classic girl-y look as well as the more eclectic grungy that I described oh-so-matter-of-factly above. I’m in love with the shoes I put on the boy here to tie his outfit in with the girls. I’ve got the perfect wall in Deep Elum for this outfit. An entire brick wall painted as the American Flag. Oooh. Could be a fabulous shoot! Love this store. Nordstrom carries some of the Mini Boden line in their stores, but nothing I’m absolutely in love with. So this is an on-line store for me.
