Best Friends Forever | Dallas Fort Worth Childrens Photographer

March 30, 2011

First off, these girls are obviously best friends.  From the beginning of the photoshoot to the end.  Their mom said, no, they don’t really fight.  Dang.  I thought my two kids were normal.  Well, okay, my kids are normal with their fighting.  These girls are a rare exception.  A beautifully rare exception.

And second, they sing together.  Specifically?  Justin Beiber.  That’s right, even the two year old sang, “Baby, baby, baby, oh!” while jumping up and down and dancing in a circle.  Big sister is the one who taught her.  And I think big sis is going to be showing her the ropes in a lot of different ways throughout their lives together.  Together.  That’s how they’ll be.Sisters by Kalli BarkerSisters by Kalli Barker

Happy Birthday, Mackay | Dallas Fort Worth Childrens Photographer

March 28, 2011

Dear Mackay,

Here you are already 4 years old.  I remember when you were born.  Both your dad and I were in school, and it was right before finals.  I had you on Thursday, missed two days of school, and had six finals the following week.  Luckily your Grandma Linda was there to hold and snuggle you those few days that I was studying like mad.  I won’t take back those hectic first few days for anything.  Because that’s when we first became best friends.  And here we are, four years later, still best friends.

You today is hard to describe in just a few short sentences.  You don’t stop talking.  Ever.  Your favorite thing to do is play pretend.  Anything pretend that puts you in charge.  And you’ve constantly got a baby or stuffed animal that you are taking care of.  You love your little brother, but he never does what you want him to.  And you are always organizing or alphabetizing something.  You’re always a girl on a mission.  You can already read and write.  You always want to be older than you are.  You are always telling me you are a mom like me, or that you’re six, or 18, or 48. . . but never three or four.  I like you just the age you are, though.

Right now in the world our President is Barack Obama.  The first black president of the United States.  There is a lot of unrest in the world.  We are still at war in Afghanistan and still have troops in Iraq.  The Egyptian people recently freed themselves of their current government.  They did it with peaceful protest and prevailed.  Libya has also begun a revolt against their own government.  It unfortunately, has not been peaceful.  We are assisting the rebels with their war.  A few weeks ago Japan experienced a horrific tsunami and earthquake.  Thousands were killed, and entire towns were destroyed.  A nuclear plant is leaking radiation.  Their people are suffering.

Your life right now.  We live in Dallas, TX where your dad works for Southwest Airlines.  He absolutely loves his job in the Network Planning department.  He gets to travel to fun places and have really neat experiences.  We are so blessed.  I am still striving to balance my life as a stay-at-home mom and photographer.  I absolutely love the balancing act and hope that you are proud of the efforts I am making to pursue a dream I love.  I hope that you, too, one day pursue your own dreams.  I’ll be there to help you along the way.

I love you with all of my heart and am excited for what our future together holds.  I can’t wait to see how you grow and what you become this next year.  I can promise many more manicures and pedicures, shopping sprees and hot fudge sundaes, and dance parties to the Black-eyed Peas.  And fights.  Lots of fights.  But someday I hope you realize that when you were four and I was 24, I really was smarter than you.

I love you forever,

Mom

Mom and Daughter by Kalli Barker*As a side note: I write birthday letters to my children every year.  I make sure to tell them about their personality, what their life was like, and what the world was like.  I save them for the day that they graduate high school/get married/or just really hate me in their teenage years.  To view Zack’s letter from last year go here.

Where I Shop | Dallas Fort Worth Childrens Photographer

March 25, 2011

I think when a mother books a photoshoot for her kiddos, the only thing stopping her from jumping up and down with giddy excitement is the nervous anticipation that she is going to have to find clothes for her kids to wear. That match…but don’t. That are girl-y…masculine.  Oh, and that her kids actually like and will wear again.  Can I get an amen?  Most clients request a What-to-Wear guide, which I happily create custom for their family and session location.  But a lot of women just need a place to START looking.  To get their own creative juices flowing.  So I thought a little run-down of my go-to stores could be helpful:
Janie and Jack Where I Shop

Janie and Jack.  If I’m looking for something very girl-y and feminine for the little lady, this is the place that I go.  They have so many great colors.  And great accessories.  (A matching umbrella?  Yes, please!)  And there is always something to dress the boy in to match.  (So sorry, but wardrobe is all arranged around the girls.)

Zara Where I ShopZara is where I went for Mackay’s birthday photoshoot outfit this year.  Their clothes are the very hip “in” style right now.  You know, the eclectic grungy look?  Do I sound like I know what I’m talking about?  From a perspective of wearing it myself–HEAVENS no.  But seeing it on others and dressing my own like this every once in a while.  LOVE it.  So, so, so, so much.  This may be the wardrobe set out of all the ones I put together today that I want to photograph the most right now.

Chasing Fireflies Where I Shopchasing-fireflies.com.  A recent client of mine introduced me to this web-site.  (Thanks, Anita!)  And I am so head-over-heels in love with it.  Not only do they have the MOST adorable little girls dresses and outfits.  (Um..boys, too.)  But their costumes are out of this world.  They’ve got toys and gifts.  If you’re looking for a big brother or little sister shirt?  This is the place to go.  They even have number shirts for your child to wear on their birthdays.  Need to plan the birthday party?  Come here.  And my favorite random find on this site: a tooth box for the tooth fairy.  It looks so authentic and official.  My mom just made me put my naked tooth under my pillow.  But now my kids will have a special box.  Seriously, this is my very favorite recent find.

Gap Where I ShopGap.  Doesn’t this wardrobe just scream “posh”?  I love it. Gap i s always a great place to go.  Especially when looking for outfits for boys and girls, and baby.  You are sure to find something to match.  And if you’ve got to clothe the whole family this is usually the first place I stop at to find it all.  I’m pretty much on a first name basis with the store manager.

Mini Boden Where I ShopMini Boden.  This is a great place to find something for everyone.  They’ve got the classic girl-y look as well as the more eclectic grungy that I described oh-so-matter-of-factly above.  I’m in love with the shoes I put on the boy here to tie his outfit in with the girls.  I’ve got the perfect wall in Deep Elum for this outfit.  An entire brick wall painted as the American Flag.  Oooh.  Could be a fabulous shoot!  Love this store.  Nordstrom carries some of the Mini Boden line in their stores, but nothing I’m absolutely in love with.  So this is an on-line store for me.

Lots to Love | Grapevine Texas Childrens Photographer

March 23, 2011

My first thoughts when I look at this baby: “Pinch, pinch, pinch!”…”I want to eat you!” …”How tight can I squeeze you?” and just, “Grrrr”.  I’m sure you all are thinking the same thing.  This little dude is adorable.  And chunky.  Which makes it ALL the better.  When he was four months he surpassed my 18 month old in weight.  Yeah, I know.  LOTS TO LOVE!  I had a wonderful time photographing this little one.  In the 85 degree afternoon weather he was the only one not sweating bullets with completely flushed out cheeks.  And it’s only March!  Summer?  I’m afraid of you.  But check out these adorable images and this absolutely wonderful chunky monkey.  And you wanna leave some love?  Sure, why not.Lots to Love by Kalli BarkerLots to Love by Kalli BarkerLots to Love by Kalli Barker

The Ugly Duckling | Dallas Fort Worth Childrens Photographer

March 21, 2011

(image from here)

Mackay goes to our local rec center for special classes every week.  She’s done classes like Races and Relays, Craft Time, Cooking and Baking, etc.  (Wonderful for grocery shopping with only one child!)  One of the teachers, whom she loves, is an elderly Hispanic woman.  This lady is fantastic with the children, and you can tell that she spends a lot of time at home preparing for her classes.  That said…

The other day Mackay came home with a homemade book of “The Ugly Duckling”.  Her teacher had made the book with coloring pages inside, and then typed of the words herself and glued them in.  Mackay was so excited to read it when she got home.  First page:

“The mother duck waiting for her little ones to hatch.”  Umm…  A few pages in:

“Mama look…he is so big!  Mother duck still loves him no matter how bigger he was.”  Hmm…  This went on throughout the book and ended with:

“Remember to not make fun to anyone that is different from you.  Be kind and respect everyone.”

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.  Mackay didn’t see any problems.  My first reaction was to hug this old woman–too sweet.  But I wasn’t sure if I should read this book anymore.  Will my kids start talking in broken English?
