When looking through my images from 2010 what shocked me the most was how different EACH family portrait was. I don’t know if you know this, but sometimes kids can be difficult–especially when they aren’t doing what they want to do. To avoid this? We just do what they want to do. I just totally sideswipe the problem of the traditional family picture.

I remember getting family pictures done when I was little. (Like, every 5 years.) I don’t think it was every a good family bonding experience. One year my mom told me the wardrobe color scheme was blue. I was so lucky, because my absolute very favorite shirt was blue. But then she changed the color to yellow. And I cried. And threw a tantrum. And wore my blue shirt anyway–with everyone else in yellow. (I really don’t care to mention I was in junior high.) Our last family picture was when I was still in high school. Minutes before it was time to go my mom made the announcement, “Put on your favorite shirt!” I don’t think we fought that day, actually. But with all brothers I was the only one in pink.
But when looking at these images I DO see families bonding. I see parents falling even more in love with their children than they already were. And I am so grateful for the opportunity that I have to capture that. Because, let me tell you, if every session I went to was like mine growing up, I wouldn’t be a photographer.
But luckily, I love my job.

David - We love your pictures for the exact reasons you mentioned. You do a great job capturing the personalities of the families you photograph.
Marcy - It’s nice to see these here as a digital collection. I feel like I’m walking through a Kalli Barker gallery. I like your work.
Aly - Kalli, all I have to say is wow. I know I have said this before but are so talented! I really enjoy your beautiful photographs and getting to know you on a deeper level from your writing. If I ever am in your area of town in the future, you can guarantee that I will be booking a session with you. Amazing, amazing work.
