Because It’s Important Now | Dallas Fort Worth Child and Family Photography

December 29, 2010

Let me introduce you to the winning family of the Holiday Spirit Giveaway in the Dallas/Fort Worth area  from a few months back.  It took us a while to get together, because Dad was deployed.  But he was able to come home for Christmas, and we snuck in a photoshoot.  I was able to capture these precious moments the day after Dad came home.  You can see the emotions and love was right on the surface.  There was multiple times I felt myself tearing up behind my camera, thankful that my lens was in the way.

The relationship between these two was SO heartwarming.  The two men of the house:Moreno Family by Kalli Barker

I asked them what they were going to do the next couple of weeks while they had Dad at home.  I loved the answer.  Each child is getting one day.  One. whole. day.  To do whatever they want.  How often do we make those special moments with our children, one-on-one?  I felt so inspired to begin loving my kids ON PURPOSE.  To PLAN them into my life.  And to create those special moments so they can occupy our memories forever.  Because it’s important now.

I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to photograph this beautiful family.  To see their love.  I left our photoshoot excited and rejuvenated.  And I went home and hugged my kids a little tighter.  When I planned this Giveaway I thought I would be helping a family in need.  But I had no idea how much I would be helped, and how much I would learn.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Mmmm….V

December 27, 2010

For all those who have half a dozen frozen, black bananas in your freezer.  Oh, that’s just me?  . . . *awkward silence*. . .

Sour Cream Banana Bread

2 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. baking soda
1 ½ cup sugar
½ cup sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla
½ cup shortening
3 large ripe bananas
2 eggs
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon

Cream eggs, sugar, sour cream, shortening, and bananas.  Add vanilla and other dry ingredients.  (Stir in ½ cup nuts if desired.)

Grease pans.  Mix together the sugar and cinnamon and dust pans lightly with cinnamon-sugar mixture.   Divide banana mixture into prepared pans. Sprinkle some cinnamon-sugar mixture on top. Bake at 375° for 35 to 45 minutes.   (Makes 2 large or 4 small loaves.)

From my dear sister-in-law, Jenn.  This banana bread is a MUST.  The crust of cinnamon and sugar on the top is to die for.  I pile on as much as humanly possible.  My husband says the only way it could be better would be to include chocolate chips.  But that is just disgusting.

Leaves are Falling | Dallas Fort Worth Child and Family Photography

December 22, 2010

I had such a blast with this family!  Their two boys were absolutely adorable and SO fun to play with, and everyone was so relaxed–it didn’t feel like work at all!  It was a great way to end the busy 2010 season.
I love this next picture because it was NOT staged.  I asked Mom and Dad to kiss behind the boys, who were just playing together, and this is what I got.  Too cute.Sears Family by Kalli BarkerSears Family by Kalli BarkerSears Family by Kalli Barker

Leave FIGHT!  I was even able to get in on some of the action.  And as soon as I felt like I got myself wiped off, I was attacked again.  :)   I found leaves the next day um…everywhere.  I even found them in my bed when I woke up in the morning.  And they all brought back completely fond memories of this great family.  I can’t wait to do it again!Sears Family by Kalli Barker

Eddie found some mistletoe on the ground.  Totally random, but what a coincidence!  Unfortunately Christin didn’t quite know what was going on.  So funny!Sears Family by Kalli Barker

My Favorite Christmas Part III

December 20, 2010

(Go here to see parts I and II.)  It was a cabin.  No motor vehicles allowed, and a mile cross-country ski in.  My uncle rigged sleds attached to poles that we could clip around our waists to carry our luggage in on.  And the adults had to take multiple trips.  To help Santa bring all the presents in in black bags.  And to get to the kitchen, you had to put your skis back on and and head a few hundred yards for breakfast.  Lunch.  Dinner.  But in the kitchen there was a chalk board.  So we would just hang out there for a while and snack in between meals.  And play hang-man.

And with no cars, or snowmobiles, or sounds around anywhere, we just hung out together.  As a family.  And made stuff up.  Like trying to ski down a hill with cross-country skis on.  Which doesn’t work.  Or opening a second story window and sliding down the roof into a pile of snow at the bottom.  When adults weren’t around.

One year on Christmas Eve my grandma told me to put my snow gear on.  I didn’t ask questions–I just did it.  Cousins and siblings asked us what we were doing, wondered if they could come with.  And my grandma said no.  (She said no.)  The night was quiet, the snow was falling peacefully.  And we went outside together.  Just me and my grandma.  She said we were going to make snow angels.  So together, we laid in the dark, in the snow, the large, soft flakes falling all around us.  And we made angels.  And laughed.  It wasn’t cold.  There were no distractions.  And at that moment time just stopped.  And it was just my grandma and me.
